The Fleming Splash Pad is set to open on Memorial Day Weekend, and it looks like this will be a cool summer for the residents of Fleming!
The Splash Pad has been a long-term goal of past Town Councils that was able to come to fruition in 2022. This goal became a reality when a particular set of circumstances came together to make it possible. After the 2020 Pandemic, the state of Colorado was giving Covid funds to towns to be used to inspire safe, outdoor activities that encouraged residents to get outside in the fresh air. These funds were given on the condition that they were used for that particular purpose only. If the town did not use the funds under those particular guidelines, the funds would be lost. With these Covid funds, and the gift of $25,000 from NextEra Energy, the Town of Fleming was able to afford the construction of a new Splash Pad.
Construction began August 2022, with most of the structure being completed by October 2022. Before a heavy, intense winter, Schiel Construction completed part of the base and the pieces of the Splash Pad including rings for kids to run through where water will shoot out, sprayers from the base, and buckets that fill up with water and pore out. Once winter was over and the weather warmed up, Schiel Construction continued construction including completing the base, with the new ground design created and chosen by Fleming residents (read more about that contest and its winners here) and a cement bath that leads from the sidewalk, around the Splash Pad, and over to the bathroom facilities.
The Splash Pad will be open from 9:00AM-7:00PM and will be on a push button timer. Once the button is pushed, the Splash Pad will remain on for a length of time and then turn off automatically. The Splash Pad may be turned off at any time due to weather or for maintenance. The water will not be recycled water, as that can cause health risks or 2-3x the cost for a system to manage disinfecting.
The Fleming Town Council plans on continuing to improve the Splash Pad and North Park, where it’s located, including updating the bathroom facilities with new sinks and toilets and any other improvements and needs that arise from Splash Pad use. The Splash Pad grand opening is Memorial Day Weekend where the Fleming Town Council hopes Fleming residents enjoy the new water feature just in time for summer.
